Mother's Day

Today is Mother's Day

I looked through images of Mary mother of Jesus.  In all the images she is very clean and saintly looking.  Probably nothing like the historical person.  As we celebrate mothers today remember it was through Mary's body, broken and bleeding in child birth, that the person Jesus came into this world.

  1. I am fascinated by the relationship between truth and image and the disparity that sometimes exists. I wonder if any of the images of Mary, Mother of Jesus, contain any clues about the historical person's true identity. Leonardo da Vinci's depictions of Mona Lisa and The Last Supper come to mind.

  2. I see a Sephardic woman, an olive skinned woman with sharp features. She has deep dark eyes and long black hair. Her hands are soft but strong. Her life is hard, but she is confident in her self. She knows her place in the world but in her home she takes her rightful crown. At the Sabbath table SHE is the priest, she says the berachot over the candles, the food, the wine. A man is not necessary for the celebration of the holiest day in the life of a Jew, the Sabbath, but oh how she suffers when she walks out her door.

  3. Joni, thank you for sharing your image; it is a lovely, poetic one! I also learned a new vocabulary word.
